5 Events to Make Christmas Bright in Lincoln City

There's always something to do in Lincoln City, and Christmas 2014 is no exception!

Here's five events going on in Lincoln City over Christmas and New Years to raise your spirits even higher!

December 12 - January 5, 2014 @ Lincoln City Cultural Center
"New York Experience" Photographic Exhibit by David Jordan
David Jordan's photography is displayed, with a twist!  The visually stimulating images are displayed with the sounds of New York City.

December 20, 2014 @ Lincoln City Community Center
Jingle Bell Jog 5K Run or Walk
Dig out those reindeer antlers, Elf shoes and Santa suits and join us for a 5K Jingle Bell Jog! The event is open to runners, joggers, walkers and even strollers. Costumes are recommended but optional, and we'll supply the bells! Participants will begin at the Lincoln City Community Center and traverse the Head to Bay sidewalk/trail along NE 22nd st and West Devils Lake Road to the intersection of Highway 101, and back. Hot chocolate and coffee will be served immediately afterwards. Sign up today!

December 27, 2014 - January 17, 2015 @ Theatre West - 8pm Thursday to Saturday - Cost: $8 -$12
Sorry, Wrong Chimney - Live Play
David Tuttle is moonlighting as a department store Santa so that he can buy his wife a fur for Christmas. He tells her he's working late at the office, but she finds out he isn't at the office. A suspected other woman, hypnotism, the notorious Santa burglar Kris Kreigle and his gun toting fiancee, and a confused policeman add up to a rollicking tale that is hilarious Christmas or anytime entertainment.

December 27 - 31, 2014

Winter Whale Watch Week - Cap off Your Christmas Vacation at the Oregon Coast

Did you know that Gray Whales:
  • Have the longest migration of any mammal: 10,000 miles a year
  • Create a distinctive V-shaped spout because of the way the two blowholes on top of their head are shaped
  • Lack a dorsal fin
  • Can grow to 49 feet long and 33 tons
  • Are can be identified by their distinctive scars
  • Eat crustaceans scrapped off the sea floor
Whales will be the topic of conversation up and down the Oregon coast during Winter Whale Watch Week.  Scheduled from December 27th to 31st, Winter Whale Watch Week is the perfect time to go to any of the official Whale Watching points on the Oregon Coast, look for whales and ask questions of the volunteers.  The volunteers will be present from 10 am to 1 pm each day of Winter Whale Watch Week.

Here's the official map of all the whale watching areas participating in Winter Whale Watch Week:

Lincoln City Glass Floats and Finders Keepers

What do artistic glass floats plus the Oregon coast add up to?  The answer is Lincoln City's Finders Keepers of course!

Throughout the off season in Lincoln City, beautiful, one of a kind, glass floats are tucked away above the high tide mark on the 7 1/2 miles of public beach between the Cutler City and Road's End sections of Lincoln City.  If you find a float, you keep it!

The 2014-2015 Finder Keepers kicks off October 18, 2014 and continues until Memorial Day weekend, 2015.

For more information on creating these glass masterpieces, take a tour of one of the many Lincoln City galleries featuring glass work.  Often, you will be able to talk to the artists and watch them in action.

Hiking the Cascade Head Trail

Cascade Head, so named for the water flowing over it's cliffs to join the ocean, is a spectacular place to enjoy a hike on the Oregon Coast, with sea lions providing a chorus in the cove, islands in the distance and abundant wildflowers in the meadows.  Located, north of Lincoln City, the headland provides three trails from which to enjoy the meadows, sea and sky.

Interested?  Perhaps you would even like a guide!  September 13, 2014 at 10 am The Nature Conservancy will be offering guided tours! These hikes can last from 2 to 4 hours depending on pace and interest.  To take advantage of this offer, please register by emailing: orvolunteers@tnc.org.

Choosing a trail will depend on season and the degree of difficulty you are in the mood for:
  • Cascade Head - Nature Conservancy Trail
4.2 Miles / Moderate Difficulty / 1200 ft elevation gain
    Open Year Round

Drive Highway 101 north 1 mile from the interchange where highways 101 and 18 join (just north of Lincoln City). Then turn left on Three Rocks Road for 2.2 miles and turn left to the parking lot of the Savage Park boat ramp.
  • Cascade Head - Upper Trail
1 mile / Easy with 160 ft elevation gain
    Open July 16 - December 31

Drive Highway 101 north from the junction with Highway 18 (just north of Lincoln City). After 4 miles, just before a crest, turn left on gravel Cascade Head Road 1861. After 3.3 miles, a guardrail on the left marks the easy, upper trailhead to the Nature Conservancy preserve on Cascade Head.

  • Hart's Cove
5.2 Miles / Moderate Difficulty  / 900 ft elevation loss
    Open July 16 - December 31

Drive Highway 101 north from the junction with Highway 18 (just north of Lincoln City). After 4 miles, just before a crest, turn left on gravel Cascade Head Road 1861. After 3.3 miles, a guardrail on the left marks the easy, upper trailhead to the Nature Conservancy preserve on Cascade Head. Continue an extra 0.8 mile on Road 1861 to a parking lot at road's end.
Cascade Head is an area set aside for conservation.  As a result, pets, bikes, camping, flower picking and fires are not allowed. And the wildlife thanks you for staying on the trails!

SOLVE it - Fall Beach Clean Up

For the past 30 years, SOLVE has coordinated volunteers to clean up Oregon beaches twice a year. While this program has been responsible for the removal of over 1.5 million tons of litter in the past 3 decades (quite the feat!) there are plenty of folks helping to keep our beaches clean every day of the year.  Just making sure to deposit trash in proper containers or removing litter that has washed up on shore helps keep Oregon beaches pristine.

So, to all the beach cleaning volunteers, both official and unofficial - THANK YOU.  We appreciate your efforts to keep Oregon beaches a joy to visit!

SOLVE Fall Beach Clean Up
Saturday, September 27, 2014 - 10:00 am -1:00 pm
